National Champs: UCLA John Wooden
Second place: Memphis State Gene Bartow
Third place: Indiana Bobby Knight
Fourth place: Providence Dave Gavitt

In Bill Walton's second season, UCLA breaks the record set by Bill Russell's USF team of 60 straight wins and takes a 70 game win streak into the tournament.  Not surprisingly, UCLA wins another title, giving John Wooden seven titles in a row and nine tournament championships all together.  At .813, Wooden widens his lead over Oklahoma State's Hank Iba.
Frank McGuire guides South Carolina to two wins and one loss maintaining his .667 record and accumulating enough games to debut on the big list in third place, making him the sixth coach to appear in twenty or more games.  McGuire won a national championship with North Carolina in 1957 and took St. John's to the finals in 1952.
Adolph Rupp becomes the third coach to retire with twenty or more tournament games to his credit.  In 41 years of coaching Kentucky, he retires with four national championships and six trips to the Final Four.
Guy Lewis and Houston suffer a first round loss, dropping his record to .519, one game over .500.
