UCLA wins again in Alcindor's last year, making John Wooden the first coach to win three titles in a row, and the first to win five tournament championships. Wooden passes the .700 mark to .719, putting him in sixth place, ahead of coaching greats Hank Iba who did not play and Adolph Rupp who won one and lost one.

Dean Smith leads North Carolina to the Final Four for the third time in three years, and debuts on the list at .583 tied for eleventh place with Don Donoher whose Dayton Flyers suffered a first round loss.

BYU loses a first round game allowing Stan Watts to debut on the list at .300 in last place.
